The Shark
1) Our ship lay at anchor at the coast of Africa. The day was splendid. From the sea blew a fresh wind. But in the evening, the weather changed and became stifling. Around sunset the captain came out on deck and called out:
“Bathing!”
And in one minute the sailors jumped into the water, lowered the sail into the water, and within the sail arranged a swimming pool.
2) On the ship with us (there) were two youngsters. The boys jumped (at) first into the water, but within the sail it was too confining for them, and they took it into their heads to swim a race in the open sea. The one boy was in the beginning in front, ahead (before) of his fellow, but later stayed behind. The boy’s father, an old artillery-officer, stood on deck and looked admiringly at his little son. When the son began to fall (stay) behind, the father called out to him:
“Don’t give up! Keep on trying!”
3) Suddenly, a cry came from deck: “Shark!”,
and we saw in the water the spine (back) of the sea-monster. The shark swam straight for the boys. “Back! Come back! Shark!” called the artilleryman. But the youngsters did not hear him, and swam further on, laughing and shouting still more gaily and loudly than before.
4) The artilleryman, white as a sheet, looked toward the boys. The sailors lowered a boat, rushed into it and raced off as fast as they could, toward the boys. But they were still far from them, when the shark was not farther than fifty yards from the boys.
5) The youngsters, in the beginning, did not hear what was shouted to them, and did not see the shark. But then one of them looked around, and we all heard a piercing scream. And the boys swam off in different directions.
6) This scream, as it were, awakened the artilleryman. He dashed off and ran to the cannon. All of us on the ship were stunned with fear, and waited, what would happen. A shot resounded and we saw that the artilleryman fell over the cannon and covered his face with his hands.
7) What happened with the shark and the boys – we did not see, because immediately the smoke obstructed our vision. But when the smoke over the water had scattered, from all sides resounded a loud and joyous shout. The old artilleryman uncovered his face, arose, and looked over the sea. The yellow belly of a dead shark was bobbing on the waves.
In (before) a few minutes a boat reached the boys and brought them to our ship.
